Mission

St John Paul II saw his teaching as part of a living dialogue with a changing world. That is why the John Paul II Vatican Foundation was conceived from the outset as a space for encounter, where faith, culture and reflection on the human condition lead to action. The Foundation fosters dialogue and cooperation, where the legacy of John Paul II inspires responsible reflection on the present and encourages concrete initiatives in the spirit of Christian values.

The Foundation acts as a bridge connecting communities of Christian culture from different parts of the world. It supports cooperation between people of culture, academia and public life who find inspiration in the teaching of John Paul II for further action. For many years, it has also fostered an international community through the Circles of Friends of the Foundation operating in various countries. This brings together people united by a shared concern for culture, dialogue and responsibility for the common good.

The John Paul II Vatican Foundation preserves and develops the Pope’s legacy, ensuring it remains a point of reference for contemporary seekers. We create an open space for students, pilgrims, artists, scholars and all those interested in reflecting on culture and the human condition. The Foundation brings together people who, inspired by the teaching of John Paul II, seek truth, beauty and the meaning of life, and who seek to translate these values into concrete social and cultural action.

We are guided by a single, overarching goal: for everyone who comes into contact with the Foundation – whether as a student, pilgrim, artist, scholar or donor – to experience that the values drawn from the Gospel and the teaching of St John Paul II have the real power to answer the questions of the contemporary world and to transform their lives. Thus, through its formative programmes, scholarship schemes, cultural events and prayer meetings, the John Paul II Vatican Foundation gradually fulfils the Polish Pope’s vision of a civilisation of love – a world founded on brotherhood and solidarity, where truth sets people free and good triumphs over evil.

Our goal is to create a space where thought meets action. We achieve this through scholarship schemes, cultural events, educational initiatives and support for young people in their intellectual and spiritual development. In this way, the legacy of John Paul II becomes an inspiration to take responsibility for culture, society and the future of the world.

Particular attention in the Foundation’s activities is given to the younger generation – their formation and intellectual and cultural development. Sensitivity to the importance of science, culture and social solidarity was one of the defining elements of Karol Wojtyła’s pontificate. Understanding his life and teaching also allows for a deeper understanding of the Foundation’s mission, which develops his legacy by creating a space for reflection, cooperation and responsible action.

The Foundation is an institution of an ecclesiastical character. It is above all an instrument of evangelization in the broad sense of the word. This is its fundamental characteristic. It is a concrete expression of the Church's care for the human person, in accordance with the principle that the human person is "the primary and fundamental way of the Church, a way traced out by Christ himself" (Redemptor hominis, 14). It is also an expression of the service that the Church renders to the nation and its culture, which has such deep Christian roots. In this spirit, the Foundation undertakes valuable initiatives in the religious, cultural, scientific, pastoral and charitable fields.
